A weather station with great specs still gives you bad data in the wrong spot. Every rule below comes from the National Weather Service's own Cooperative Observer Program (COOP) siting standard — the same standard NOAA uses for its official network, adapted here for a home yard.
1. Mounting height
Mount the outdoor temperature/humidity sensor 4–6 feet above the ground. Too low and it reads ground-radiated heat; too high and it drifts from the standard measurement height entirely.
2. Clearance from obstructions
Keep the sensor at least 4× the height of any nearby obstruction away from it — a 6 ft fence needs 24 ft of clearance. This matters most for wind speed and direction, which a nearby wall or hedge will distort badly.
3. Distance from paved surfaces
The professional standard calls for 100 feet from any paved or concrete surface, since pavement re-radiates heat and skews daytime highs. Most suburban yards cannot fully meet this — get as far from your driveway and patio as the yard allows, and treat hot-day highs as slightly inflated if you can't.
4. Rain gauge exposure
For the rain gauge specifically, the rule is different: any nearby obstruction's height must not exceed 2× its distance from the gauge. A gauge tucked too close to a tall obstruction under-catches rain in windy conditions.
